After months of cold, snow, and dormancy, spring is when your lawn and landscape start fresh. What you do in those first few weeks sets the tone for the entire growing season. Here's the JNE Lawn Care checklist for a strong spring start.
Before you do anything else, rake. Winter leaves matted turf, dead grass, and other debris behind that can block sunlight and air from reaching the soil. A good thorough rake — or a professional spring cleanup — clears the way for healthy new growth.
Wait until your grass is actively growing before making the first cut, and set your mower height higher than you think you need. Cutting too short stresses the lawn and leaves it vulnerable to weeds. A good rule of thumb: never remove more than one-third of the blade height at a time.
Clean, sharp bed edges define your landscape and give everything a polished look. Spring is the perfect time to re-establish bed lines that have gotten blurry over winter. This is usually done by hand or with a bed edger before mulch goes in.
Mulch fades, compacts, and breaks down over winter. A fresh layer in spring — typically 2 to 3 inches deep — suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and gives your beds a finished look that elevates the entire property.
Spring is the busiest time of year for lawn care companies. If you want to get on a regular maintenance schedule, call early — slots fill up fast. JNE Lawn Care books out weeks in advance in April and May.
